Here we have my original and unmolested ladder hatch Caddy 2k. I have owned it for 8 years and it’s been fantastic. I have not driven it much for the last few years since we had our first kid, but have kept it anyway as it’s so cheap to run (40-45 mpg and all parts are cheap compared to Transporter), great to drive and practical. But now we’ve got 2 kids and a LWB Transporter with 6 seats so it’s got to go. If you only need 2 seats, the ladder hatch makes nearly as practical as a Transporter at half the cost!
I spent a while waiting to get the spec I wanted when I bought it:
1. One of the last 1.9 tdi engines. 77 kW / 105 BHP. I’ve had a few, like that they are simpler and think they are great.
2. Silver. The best loooking Caddy colour in my opinion
3. I would have settled for the other two, but Ladder Hatch / Ladder Light makes it just as practical as the Transporters I have had before and after
First registered 27 Dec 2006. 2 previous owners. Previous was a health and safety consultant who only put his dog in the back (very clean dog – doesn’t smell of dog!). He told me the original owner was the MD of a waste management company so again didn’t use the van for any hard work. I have used the van for maintaining water turbines which takes me all over the country, but the main of my milage has been motorway miles carrying tools.
The van has been super reliable. It’s only let me down once when the electric power steering rack failed about 5 years ago, so thats fairly new. New windsceen due to crack last summer. New exaust 2 years ago. Cam shaft and air flow sensors 3 years ago. Cam belt replaced at 90 k, 7 years ago.
Good condition for its age but small marks here and there. Would look great with paint touched up, t-cut and polish. Hole in the bumper (easy to find second hand or upgrade to a colur coded one also avaiable second hand from Touran). No known rust beyond tiny surface bits (parked in a dry shed the majority of the time I’ve owned it). Both wing mirror surrounds are a bit broken and wobbly. They have been for years, but easy to replace (I just didnt as I spend a lot of time on narrow country lanes with hedges that break them!). Drivers seat lower adjuster pulled off the other day and I haven’t refitted / replaced it (its there, in one piece, just don’t know if its refittable or it needs a new one). Also the drivers door open / close sensor is faulty and the light doesn’t come on when you open the drivers door. I mean to get this fixed, but have got so used to it, I keep forgetting. One of the windscreen squirters is loose / taped in place and wants replacing too. Also the driver seat belt beeper doesn’t work. Some may see this a fault, for me hopping in and out around site, its been a real bonus not to be beeped at all the time!
The ladder hatch is brilliant. As a work van it makes carrying 3 m lengths easy, generally easier than in a SWB or LWB Transporter from experience of all 3. 5 m ladders are abolutey fine so long as strapped both ends and there is amazingly little wind noise. They are very sought after (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2470673919651864/), most of other original one’s of these I have seen have been green and I have read that there were only ever 50 in the UK, but they are certainly rare (https://caddy2k.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=54207). The only ones I have seen for sale recently have been £ 3,500 for a rough one (https://www.facebook.com/groups/vwcaddyownersclub/posts/956701706082746/?_rdr), £ 7,000 for an immaculate one (https://www.gumtree.com/p/vans/vw-caddy-ladder-hatch/1480188027), both a year newer but green.

Top quiality Titan seat covers (https://www.titancovers.co.uk/volkswagen-caddy-2004-onwards-van-seat-covers/) on they whole time I have owned it and seats are tip-top underneath.
Tows great. Rated at 1.5 t – only used once, a year ago. Trailer plug replaced a couple of years ago. The previous owner said he never used the tow bar and looking at the condition of the hitch I would imagine its barely been used at all. I had the trailer and van fully laden and whilst you certainly knew about it, it still went brilliantly.
